Many Thanks for a Wonderful Holiday Season

Thousands of shoppers came to find the perfect holiday gift this season and were delighted by musical selections performed  from the casts of some of Off-Broadway's hottest shows. In addition, over 4,000 people visited the Union Square Partnership booth for coupons to area businesses, Off-Broadway theatre discounts, free holiday totes, and information about the neighborhood. USP extends a special thanks to Urban Space Management, the League of Off-Broadway Theatres and Producers, Greenwich Village-Chelsea Chamber of Commerce and the NYC Department of Parks and Recreation. See you next year!

Crossroads of New York Walking Tour

USP has teamed with Big Onion Walking Tours to create a free 90-minute walking tour called Union Square: Crossroads of New York. The tour explores the neighborhood's vibrant history through discussions of the people, history, architecture, and forces that have shaped our community. You'll hear how Union Square got its name, see where the legendary Tiffany & Co. once stood, and learn how to read "The Metronome" clock (yes, it's a clock!) and much, much more. The tour meets inside the park every Saturday at 2:00 PM by the Lincoln Statue on the 16th Street transverse. Look for the tour guide holding a USP sign and enjoy!

Washington Irving Student Wins Prestigious Award
Congratulations to USP Education Program participate Tamar Brown on being named a Posse Scholarship recipient, granting her full tuition for four years at Brandeis University. Tamar was chosen out of a pool of over 3,000 nominated applicants, and this is the second consecutive year that an USP Education Program student has won this coveted award. Tamar has displayed exceptional leadership skills during her time at Washington Irving as an After-School Ambassador, President of the Key Club, Debate Team member, Youth Peace Network founding member, and Woman's Day intern. Tamar graciously remarked, "My involvement in USP activities at Washington Irving High School allowed me to stand out among my peers and I thank the Union Square Partnership."
Neighborhood Favorites with Bank of America's David DeSanctis

Bank of America recently opened their new Union Square Banking Center at 36 East 14th Street and University Place. USP caught up with Bank Manager David DeSanctis to ask him about his favorite places in the Union Square area.

Favorite place for an afternoon snack. Rainbow Falafel on 17th Street has great prices, a friendly staff and tasty treats for anytime of the day.

How you get to work in the morning. Being in Union Square has been the highlight of my career so far! You can get there from anywhere. I start my commute in Connecticut and easily make it to this major New York City transportation hub.

A place to unwind. Union Square Cafe is a world-class restaurant with imaginative food, great hospitality and comfortable surroundings.

A "must-see" for an out of town guest. Fuerzabruta at the Daryl Roth Theatre is a performance that rocks the house!

Bring HOPE to Fellow New Yorkers

The NYC Department of Homeless Services is seeking volunteers to help conduct its sixth annual Homeless Outreach Population Estimate (HOPE 2008) on January 28th. Teams of volunteers will canvass streets, parks, and subways to count the number of people living unsheltered in NYC. Volunteers will meet at training sites throughout the city at 10:30 PM, receive a brief orientation, and then disperse to their assigned areas from 12:00 AM to 4:00 AM. HOPE 2008 is part of Mayor Bloomberg’s five-year action plan to end chronic homelessness and develop appropriate housing resources for the most vulnerable New Yorkers currently living without shelter. Click here to volunteer or call 311.

Trade in Trees, Help NYC Grow

NYC Department of Parks & Recreation encourages New Yorkers to help the environment and beautify our community by participating in 2008 MulchFest. On January 5th and 6th from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM, residents can bring used Christmas trees to designated locations around the City so that they can be ground into wood chips for use in tree pits and gardens. If you also bring a bag along, you can take home free mulch to help turn winter trees into spring flowers!

Theatre Week Offers 2 for 1 Delights

Calling all theatre fans! The League of Off-Broadway Theatres and Producers is offering two tickets for the price of one from January 21st - 27th in celebration of Live Theatre Week.

Recycle Your E-Waste

On January 6th from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM, NYC residents are encouraged to bring unwanted or broken electronics to Union Square Park's North Plaza (Broadway & East 17th Street) for recycling. Appropriate electronics include computers, monitors, televisions, radios, cell phones and more. Hosted by the Lower East Side Ecology Center, Con Edison, and the NYC Department of Parks & Recreation, this event helps to keep hazardous materials out of the waste stream and the environment.

New Year Brings New Businesses

The Union Square Partnership welcomes several new businesses to the district. Journelle (3 East 17th Street between 5th Avenue and Broadway, 212 255-7800) sells what founder Claire Chambers (pictured above), calls "the thinking woman's lingerie." Also new to the neighborhood is Pierre Loti (53 Irving Place between 17th and 18th Streets, 212 777-5684), a charming new wine bar with cozy Turkish-inspired decor, affordable wines by the glass and assorted mezes. For delicious food on the fly, stop by City Gourmet (238 East 14th Street between 2nd and 3rd Avenues, 212 260-6040) where you'll find a wide selection of paninis, pasta, salads and more including free wireless internet.

Get Your Paws on Some Puppy Love

New Yorkers can support Friends of Union Square Dog Run by purchasing their adorable 2008 Wall Calendar, which features Union Square Park's famous fuzzy faces. Proceeds go toward making improvements to the park's dog run and creating a safe space for all of the district's coolest canines.

Spend an Afternoon at OLiVES

Todd English's OLiVES knows how to make a delicious meal, but now they have even mastered the afternoon quick bite. OLiVES New York (201 Park Avenue South) is introducing an afternoon menu featuring a selection of salads, flatbreads and light bites. Visit the living room or bar weekdays from 2:30 PM - 5:30 PM for a late lunch or mid-day snack in Union Square.
