July Heats Up with Music, Dance & More

On June 27th, the 2007 Summer in the Square series kicked off with kids and parents rockin' with Rebecca Frezza and Big Truck, and later that afternoon, The Nashville Attitude brought out the country in Union Square with its unique brand of county music! Summer in the Square takes takes place every Wednesday through August 15th, and July promises to be a packed month of fun family entertainment.

On July 11th at 12:30 PM, dance to hot mambo and cha-cha with Don Adolfo Orquesta Organizacion, revitalize at 3:00 PM with OM yoga, and at 6:00 PM watch the unforgettable African and Modern dance styles from Harambee Dance Co.

On July 18th at 12:30 PM rock with New York cover band, the Spies, 3:00 PM OM yoga, and at 6:00 PM prepare to be wowed by the high energy, kids’ rock band, AudraRox.

On July 25th at 12:30 PM The Chuck Braman Quintet offers modern jazz musical stylings, 3:00 PM OM yoga, and at 6:00 PM The New School MK Groove Orchestra incorporate heavy funk textures with jazz melodies.

Harvest in the Square Tickets On Sale July 15th!
You're invited to a fabulous evening of gourmet food, drink and fun on Thursday, September 20th. Tickets for Harvest in the Square, Manhattan's premier tasting event, go on sale July 15th at www.unionsquarenyc.org.  The event under the big tents features over 50 of the area's finest restaurants preparing their signature dishes. Proceeds from the annual event benefit the Union Square Partnership's neighborhood programs including the beautification of Union Square Park.
Washington Irving Summer of Community Service

Summer of Service, a part of the USP Education Program at Washington Irving High School, is a five-week program where students engage in activities which build self-confidence, character and community involvement.  This summer's program starts on July 5th with participants volunteering for projects around the city including serving meals in soup kitchens, working with young children at shelters, and planting in City parks. Summer of Service is seeking donations of food to provide participating students with nutritious lunches for the duration of the program.  If you would like to support these efforts, please contact Marissa Lee at 212-358-0165.

Restaurant Week Highlights Neighborhood Culinary Delights

Harry Potter Midnight Magic Costume Party

On Friday, July 20th, Union Square will be home to the world's largest costume party when Barnes & Noble Union Square, located at 33 East 17th Street, presents the Harry Potter Midnight Magic Costume Party! Hosted by Jim Dale, narrator of the Harry Potter audiobooks, this FREE community event will feature favorite characters and magically marvelous costumes. The fun starts at 5:00 PM with a countdown until midnight when Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (Book 7) goes on sale. Don't miss it!

Central Air Conditioning Program Helps Save Energy

Con Edison’s Central Air Conditioning Program offers businesses a way to better manage energy use with high-tech programmable thermostats for central air-conditioning systems. By participating in the program, businesses can help ensure a safe, reliable power supply. The thermostats can be programmed manually or remotely via the Internet to ensure indoor comfort and save energy.

GreeNYC Tells New Yorkers Its Hip to Be Green

On June 25th, Mayor Bloomberg announced GreeNYC, a new campaign to educate New Yorkers on the simple steps they can take to reduce pollution and greenhouse gases and create a greener, greater New York. GreeNYC is part of PlaNYC, the Mayor’s far-reaching plan to fight global warming and prepare New York City for an estimated one million more residents by 2030. In that plan, the Mayor set an ambitious target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 30% by 2030.

Summer in the Greenmarket

Union Square Greenmarket swings into summer with sugar snaps, tristar strawberries, sweet and sour cherries, blueberries, summer squash, fava beans, shell peas, fresh garlic, new potatoes and corn. In addition to an array of fresh produce, Greenmarket is now featuring cooking demos on each market day. Visit the Manager's Table any Monday, Wednesday or Friday at noon to sample some of the season's fare and see talented chefs in action.
