New Trash Cans for Union Square
Union Square Partnership is delighted to announce that the Partnership has purchased 25 new trash receptacles that have been distributed throughout the Union Square area - bringing the new receptacle total to 130!  The photo above shows the USP's Sanitation team unloading the newly minted receptacles on March 3.  The increased popularity of the area has generated record levels of pedestrian traffic and a corresponding increase in the amount of trash.  The new trash containers are another initiative in a series of USP programs that are keeping the streets clean as the continued popularity of the District grows.  During the month of April, Whole Foods customers will be asked to donate directly to the Partnership in the amounts of $2, $5, and $10 when checking out at the Union Square location to help defray the costs of the project.

March 2006 Presidential Classroom Scolars at WIHS!
Every year ConEdison sponsors two students from Washington Irving High School to attend the national Presidential Classroom Scholars Program, a week-long activity in Washington, DC that allows students to go behind the scenes of the nation's capital.  This year, WIHS students Beraiah Yisrael and Mmadu Ulasi, were hand-picked by the Partnership's College and Career Program Coordinator, Mike Gianakos, to attend the program from February 18th to the 25th.  Both students returned with enthusiasm, noting their enjoyment in meeting students from across the country, taking part in the program's mock 'congress' and taking a tour of the Pentagon.  The Partnership, with support from ConEd, looks forward to providing the opportunity to WIHS students once again next year!

Model Union Square Citizen
Meet Nicole Barth - a Union Square resident who has helped to make Union Square Park, and more specifically the Union Square Dog Run, what it is today!  "What I love most about this area is the diversity:  here you can find a mix of people from young to old and a flavor of all the surrounding neighborhoods like Chelsea, Gramercy, and the West Village."   In 1999, After adopting her dog, whom she named Maggie Thompson, Nicole became involved with the Union Square Dog Run and championed improvements to its dilapidated state by aligning the project with the '99 Union Square Park south end renovations and initiating a fundraising push soliciting donations from area businesses, residents, and veterinarians.  Now the mother of a 1-year-old daughter, Nicole looks forward to redirecting some of her attention to becoming involved with the many children's activities that happen around the area and is looking forward to the upcoming playground renovations and the redevelopment of the North End of Union Square Park.  To get involved with the continued maintenance and improvements of the Union Square Dog Run you can e-mail Nicole at nicolebarth@hotmail.com.  And don't forget to check out the website at www.uniondog.org!
