| Neighborhood Favorites With City
Year's Tony Shaw |
|
Each Monday and Friday
morning, young people in red jackets fill the steps of
Union Square's south plaza for physical fitness and
community activism. They are part of City Year,
a program that asks young adults to dedicate a year of
their life to improving the lives of others. USP caught
up with City Year's Deputy Executive Director
Tony Shaw (pictured painting above) to ask him
about his favorite places in Union Square.
Place for
artistic inspiration. The Union Square Dog
Run always energizes and inspires
me. It is also a great place for our corp members
to meet and talk with the local
community. Favorite Greenmarket
purchase. Breezy Hill Orchard’s
Apple Cider is perfect for a hot New
York City
day.
Where to buy that special
gift. With Mother's Day coming up, Fresh is great
place to buy some nice products for
Mom.
Kid-friendly
shopping. Barnes &
Noble always has a wonderful
selection of kids' books and offers
family activities like story time readings and
signings.
Favorite place to grab a bite. This
winter, I loved the hot chocolate at
Max
Brenner's Chocolate Bar. They also have
delicious sandwiches for
lunch. |
| Mock Interviews With Clearly,
Gottlieb, Steen & Hamilton |
|
On April 3rd, nineteen Washington
Irving students from USP’s Youth Advisory
Program traveled to Cleary, Gottlieb, Steen &
Hamilton to participate in mock interviews. Lawyers
volunteered their time to meet with students
individually to provide helpful feedback on their
interviewing skills. In addition to the
interviews, the Advisory Program provides
participants with counseling to develop life skills,
strengthen academic performance, and prepare for future
educational and professional experiences. WIHS Junior
Tyrone Davis said, “My experience at the CGSH mock
interviews was a great opportunity for my friends and
me, because saw how an interview would look and
feel, which will help us get jobs in the
future.” |

| ...And New Neighborhood
Restaurants |
| Union
Square is one of the best tasting neighborhoods in the
City and it is easy to see why with the addition of
three new restaurants. Danal
Restaurant (pictured above; 59
Fifth Avenue, 212-982-6930) offers delicious French and
Mediterranean cuisine in a cozy, romantic setting. "We
fulfill a niche in the neighborhood. Dining here is like
being inside someone's home; very French Provençal," says
Manager Bobby Allan. B.R. Guest adds some kick to the
neighborhood with Wildwood
BBQ (225 Park Avenue South,
212-533-2500), serving up
multi-regional American barbecue in a rustic urban
setting. Be one of the first to try their hearty
barbecued meats, corn bread or creamy coleslaw with a
New York City flair. You can also visit Café Society
(9 East 16th
Street, 212-675-4700) offering a fusion of Asian and
continental cuisine in a newly-renovated, elegant space.
"We serve an eclectic menu of sushi,
mussels with a French twist, deconstructed Spanish
bocadillos, or American-style spare ribs. We aim to
create an elegant and enticing atmosphere," says
General Manager Francois-Xavier Fiorilla.
