Neighborhood Favorites With Whole Foods' Sam Fishman

Sam Fishman, Whole Foods Market Store Leader, brings fresh, healthy food to the “green-minded” Union Square community. USP caught up with Sam to ask him about his favorite places in the Union Square area.

A great place to grab a bite. Dining out is the most exciting thing about Union Square. I love Chat N Chew, Toasties for a sandwich, and Chipotle for a big fat burrito.

A hidden gem in the neighborhood. My favorite place to go is Beads of Paradise. They have the most extensive and unusual selection of beads.

Best place for a workout. Equinox gym. It’s like going to the spa every day.

A place to buy Autumn treats. I have to say our Bakery at Whole Foods. We have anything Pumpkin you could ever want…pumpkin muffins, pumpkin cookies, pumpkin truffles, pumpkin scones, pumpkin tea cakes, pumpkin whoopee pies with maple cream. You name it, we’ve got it! And if we don’t, we can make it for you.

A “must-see” for an out of town guest. The Greenmarket is a must for anyone, whether they live in the city or they are visiting from out of town. There’s no place like it. You gotta try the pretzels!

A relaxing getaway. When I need a break I go sit in Union Square Park on the steps across from Whole Foods and people watch. There’s always something going on.

Pitching in to Beautify the Park

On October 20th, over 40 volunteers from the Union Square area and beyond joined USP for a day of autumn gardening in Union Square Park. "It's My Park! Day was a great way to spend time with my friends while helping out the community," said Apolos Israel, an 11th grader at Washington Irving High School. "We planted bulbs, raked leaves, painted picnic benches, and cleaned the Park." It's My Park! Day, organized by Partnerships for Parks, helps New Yorkers connect with and contribute to their local park.

District Eateries Hailed Shining Success By Michelin

USP congratulates three Harvest in the Square 2007 participating restaurants that have received a star in the 2008 Michelin Guide to New York City for their exceptional culinary achievements. Devi, Fleur de Sel, and Gramercy Tavern exhibit the wide range of flavors available in and around Union Square, showcasing Indian, French, and American cuisine. The Michelin Guide, an institution in France, is the world's most prestigious food ratings book.

Illuminating the Path to Success

On October 30th, USP hosted its annual Success Day at Washington Irving High School, which offers students the opportunity to explore a range of careers by interacting with community leaders in a wide variety of industries, including  the arts, law, not-for-profit, media, government, and finance. Fifty participants shared with students their academic experiences, work habits, and methods for their own professional and personal success. "There is nothing more gratifying than sharing some of the elements of success and connecting with the students, demonstrating that it is in every student's grasp with just a little bit of effort," says Gotham City Restaurant Group Partner Eric Petterson. Students also found the experience rewarding. "Listening to the speakers made me feel empowered," confirmed Gauisha Plaza, senior at WIHS. USP would like to thank all the participants who helped make this such a special and productive day!

Planting One Million Trees Today for a Greener NYC Tomorrow

In an effort to increase greening efforts in the City, Million Trees NYC, a PlaNYC initiative, has pledged to plant and care for one million trees throughout the five boroughs in the next decade. Through a mix of public and private plantings, Million Trees NYC will expand New York City’s urban forest by 20%, helping make New York more beautiful, efficient, and green. "Planting a million trees will make a noticeable difference around New York City,” said Parks Commissioner Adrian Benepe. “Trees make neighborhoods more livable and increase property values, cool and clean the air, shelter and feed wildlife. The comforting shade of trees soothes the senses and returns us to nature, rounding out the rough edges of urban life.” Over the summer, USP staff surveyed the district and identified over a dozen locations where new trees are being planted this month! Find Out today how you can bring more trees to our neighborhood.

New Street Furniture Pops Up Throughout the District

Stop by the corner of 14th Street and Union Square East to congratulate newsstand operator Shahab Uddin who has moved into one of the City's brand new newsstands. The kiosks are designed by the Spanish firm Cemusa, which is also responsible for the sleek new bus shelters popping up all over the neighborhood. The newsstands and bus shelters are part of a 20-year contract that will earn the City approximately $1.4 billion. Better-lit and more efficiently designed, the newsstands make for an eye-catching addition to Union Square.

Fuerzabruta Opens at Daryl Roth Theater

A hot new show has arrived in Union Square so don't miss out! The Daryl Roth Theater dazzles with the unique, interactive spectacle Fuerzabruta. The artists aim to create an entirely new style of theater, "Without Translation. Without Anesthesia. Brutally Happy."
