"Summer in the Square" ~ Begins June 27th

Come out for yoga, music, dance, improv theater, and children's programming on Union Square Park's center lawn every Wednesday from June 27th - August 15th (except July 4th). Summer in the Square, USP's FREE weekly performance series, kicks off on the 27th at 12:30 PM with a lunchtime family-focused performance by Rebecca Frezza and Big Truck, a singer/songwriter whose videos have been featured on NOGGIN. Later that evening at 6:00 PM, The Nashville Attitude brings its Southern-style rock music to the park. In addition, neighborhood-based OM yoga will lead an outdoor class every week at 3:00 PM, accessible to people of all ages and abilities.

Special thanks to Summer in the Square sponsors Con EdisonW New York - Union Square, ORDA, NYC Department of Parks and Recreation, McBurney YMCA, and the 14th Street Y.

GVO Benefit Concert

The concert will feature the extraordinary young people who won the GVO Young Artists Competition this year, as well as the WIHS Step Team, the Floor Breakers. The concert will conclude with a performance of Ravel's blockbuster Bolero. Tickets are $15 at the door: $10 for students and seniors.

Neighborhood Favorites with W's Ed Maynard

Ed Maynard, General Manager of the W Hotel - Union Square, joined the Partnership to volunteer with his two sons (pictured above) for It's My Park! Day. USP caught up with Ed to ask him about his favorite places in the Union Square area.

Favorite place for an afternoon snack. Obviously the flatbread and PB&J pancakes at Olives is a favorite. I also enjoy the sushi at Whole Foods and a mocha frappuccino at Starbucks.

Best place to buy ties. Is there any other place than Rothman’s? Their selection and quality of merchandise is as good as, if not better than any shop along 5th Avenue, and their sales people are genuinely concerned about customer satisfaction.

Kid-friendly shopping. My boys love the Barnes & Noble children’s section and story time.

A hidden gem in the neighborhood.  The High Tea at Lady Mendl’s is a real treat. I would be remiss if I didn’t mention Underbar on 17th Street, under the W New York - Union Square!

Favorite Greenmarket purchase. I love the Greenmarket. I was born and raised in the Adirondacks and the products sold remind me of home. My favorite purchase is from the pretzel vendor - actually it’s my 4 and 5 year olds favorite and therefore, mine.

On-the-Fly Wi-Fi Event

On June 15th, Nokia, WIRED and USP will host a state-of-the-art internet browsing event, On-the-Fly Wi-Fi on the South Plaza of Union Square Park. Nokia representatives will be circulating the park demonstrating the latest technology of hand held internet devices. Stop by the event tent between 11:30 AM and 2:30 PM to relax, listen to live music, and enter for your chance to win one of three Nokia N800 Internet tablets. To take advantage of the free wireless Internet access sponsored by WIRED and USP year-round in the park, log onto our website for instructions.

Collections will take place every Monday during the pilot period from June 4th through August 27th from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM at Union Square Park's northeast corner. Small Business Spotlight

 Blind Pig Bar

The Blind Pig Bar is one of NYC's newest watering holes that hearkens back to the days of prohibition. A “Blind Pig,” a roaring 1920's slang for a speakeasy, is all you'd hope for from a bar of that classic era (233 East 14th Street between 2nd & 3rd Avenues, 212 209-1573).

Thai Me Up

Thai Me Up brings its own spin on spicy, Thai-Vietnamese fusion to the neighborhood. Sample delicious sandwiches and noodle bowls close to home and work (238 East 14th Street between 2nd & 3rd Avenues, 212 533-8424).
