Get Involved and Impact Teens at
WIHS |
|
Volunteering can
be incredibly rewarding for both volunteers and high
school students. The USP Education
Program at Washington Irving High School
offers a variety of options for you to Get
Involved, and
donate your time and energy. Community residents and
businesses can provide students with
internships and
part-time employment, or work one-on-one with a student
as a mentor or tutor in critical areas like
English-as-a-Second-Language, math
and science. Your organization
can also play a role by participating in Success
Day or our job shadowing programs.
Success
Day kicks off the school year by bringing nearly
100 community leaders to Washington Irving to expose
students to a range of careers and connect
them with professionals from a variety of
industries. Job
shadowing
is another
career exploration activity that allows students to
spend a few hours with a professional in
their place of work. For more information,
contact USP Director of Education Tanya Navas at (212)
460-8418 or tnavas@unionsquarenyc.org. |

Neighborhood
News
Neighborhood Favorites
with Nina Footwear CEO Scott
Silverstein |
|
Nina
Footwear CEO Scott Silverstein recently
moved their corporate headquarters and showroom,
which includes 100 employees, to 200
Park Avenue South. USP caught up
with Scott to ask him about his favorite places in
the Union Square area.
Place
for artistic inspiration. One of the reasons we
moved Nina Footwear to the Union Square area was the
energy, the greenery, and the excitement of the Square.
We get
artistic inspiration from the people, the music, the
flowers, everything!
Hidden gem in the neighborhood. I get my shoes
shined at David's Shoe Repair on 17th Street near
Broadway (23 East 17th St.) It’s a
very small shop, and they do a great
job.
Best
place for a workout. Definitions
is my gym. Tanessa and Katy are both
great personal trainers and the entire
staff is very focused.
A
relaxing getaway. It’s nice to sit on the
terrace at Blue Water
Grill and people watch or have a cocktail at
the bar.
Where to
buy that special gift. The staff at Italian Wine
Merchants will help you select a vintage
Brunello or Barolo from some of Italy’s finest
producers. It’s such a pleasure
visiting their beautiful shop.

Reporting Noise
Complaints |
|
New York's new noise code took effect on July 1,
2007. Noise complaints continue to be the number one
quality of life issue for City residents,
and prior to the change, the City's noise code was
over 30 years old. The new legislation establishes
a flexible, yet enforceable noise code that responds to
the need for peace and quiet while maintaining New
York's reputation as the "City that never sleeps." For
more information, check out the NYC Department of
Environmental Protection brochure, and as
always, please call 311 to
report noise complaints or other quality of life
issues. |

New
Local Bike Laws Promote Safety |
|
As part
of USP's continuing outreach, we would like to
inform area businesses and residents of a change in
local bike laws that could affect your
business. On July 26, 2007, two new local
laws went into effect in New York City regarding
the posting of bicycle safety procedures signs, and
the responsibilities of business owners who employ
bicycle operators. Failure to comply with
these laws could result in fines or legal action.
For more information, read
the bike law's poster and visit the
NYC Department of
Transportation website. Working
together, we can keep our neighborhood
safe! |
| Small Biz Alert: Be Prepared!

Recognizing the importance of small businesses to
the City and its economic vitality, the NYC Department of Small
Business Services (SBS) and Office of Emergency
Management (OEM) have partnered on
Ready New York for
Business, a guide
to prepare the small business community for emergencies
and disaster recovery. Working with
SBS and OEM, USP has distributed Ready New
York for Business pamphlets to area businesses to
spread the word about steps that can be taken to recover
quickly and effectively in the event of a disaster. To
