Union Square Partnership's Education Team develops and coordinates important academic, recreational and real-world readiness programs for students during and after the school day. Our programs directly impact and improve the lives of our local high school students. Read below to learn more about our programs. You too can volunteer or make a donation in support of WIHS.
USP Office
USP's office serves as our hub and the business community's link within the school. Information on all USP programs is available here. Staffed by work-study students from the New School, USP also serves as a computer lab and resource center where students can do college research and receive help with homework and college essay writing, resume preparation and scholarship applications.
Math Tutoring
Now in its tenth year, the Math Tutoring Program pairs volunteer tutors from local businesses with students to help them improve their basic and advanced math skills and prepare for the Math Regents exams. This program has been successful in providing students with positive role models as they work to develop their mathematical and reasoning skills. Tutoring takes place once a week in various time slots between 10:00 AM and 2:30 PM throughout the academic year.
Homework Help Center
USP offers a Homework Help Center as part of our effort to support academic success at WIHS. Tutors provide academic assistance to students in math, English, Global and U.S. History and Science (including Living Environment, Chemistry, and Physics). Tutors also assist students in developing good homework and test-taking skills, while providing encouragement and support for students' academic and personal goals. Tutoring takes place between 2:30-5:30 PM, Mondays through Thursdays.
Character Education & Counseling
ESL Mentoring
The ESL Mentoring Program pairs members of the community with English language learners. Students and mentors meet weekly, one-on-one, to take part in activities that focus not only on literacy but on life skills as well. Mentoring is a great way to form close relationships with students, while at the same time helping them to develop their language skills. Most importantly, mentors act as positive role models, helping to connect students to school and community resources while providing support and encouragement. Mentoring takes place once a week from 12:15-1:00 PM during the academic year.
Youth Advisory
Youth Advisors work intensively with small groups of students to set and meet academic, personal, and professional goals. They function as advocates, mentors, and facilitators to support participants' experiences in high school and beyond.
After-School Clubs
The After-School Program offers nearly 15 different weekly activities to approximately 600 students. The clubs cover a wide-variety of interests such as art, health and wellness, literacy, and technology. After-School activities are often student-initiated and include such exciting clubs as Boxing, Culinary Club, Debate, Step Teams and The Video Lab.
Summer Jobs Program
Students acquire marketable skills and gain exposure to a variety of industries through summer job experiences. Each year, USP works with local businesses to identify paid jobs for students. In preparation for their summer positions, students take part in workshops designed to familiarize them with the interview process, resume writing and workplace etiquette.
Career Readiness
Through relationships with businesses and community members, USP helps students prepare for the world of work. Our programs include internships, job shadowing, summer jobs, career days, classroom guest speakers and workplace skill development workshops. The workshops, which are attended by over 30 students a week, assist young adults with creating resumes and developing interview skills. During our annual Success Day, over a hundred professionals volunteer to be guest speakers and visit classrooms to discuss various aspects of their professional and personal lives to demonstrate various elements of success.
College Readiness
Our many programs are designed to equip students with the skills necessary to navigate the college and financial aid application process. USP brings former students back into the school to speak to seniors about their transition from high school to college. Students are also taken on day trips to colleges and universities to expose them to college living and give them insight into the various possibilities.
USP helps connect families with WIHS and advocates on behalf of the students being served. We also provide opportunities for personal enrichment and increased awareness through weekend and after work workshops.
USP provides teachers with access to free college courses and wellness activities, as well as coordinates professional development activities offered by our partners. We assist with Freshman orientation by offering workshops in August to incoming ninth graders. We also coordinate House Advisory Committees whose volunteer members work to support the school and its small learning communities through technical assistance, curriculum development, guest speakers, internship opportunities and much more.
