In 1994, the Union Square Partnership made a commitment to long-term community prosperity by establishing a relationship with Washington Irving High School (WIHS) that has since evolved into one of New York City's most comprehensive public-private partnerships in education. USP's Education Program leverages the energy and resources of New York City to enrich students' educational experiences and prepare them for successful futures in college and the workplace.
Our Education Program, funded through donations, special events and grants, brings businesses and community members directly into the school to provide everything from books and computers to tutoring and mentoring support. Currently serving over 800 students in Washington Irving High School, our award-winning programs focus on the following:
Academic Support - to supplement and support scholastic achievement;
Special Interest Activities - to encourage development of extracurricular talents and skills;
College & Career Programs - to support progress through and beyond high school;
Character Education & Counseling - to cultivate life skills and identity, and support mental health and wellness;
Family Involvement - to cultivate life skills and identity, and support mental health and wellness;
Faculty Resources - to offer professional development and opportunities for enhanced instruction and assist in managing and expanding the relationships between the school, its partners and government officials to advocate for and procure resources for the school.
Advisory Committees - to coordinate the efforts of business partners who volunteer their time and work to support the school and its small learning communities through technical assistance, curriculum development, guest speakers, internship opportunities, and much more.
