The
USP's Summer Enrichment 2006
("A Summer of Service") kicked off on July 5th at
Washington Irving HS. During this 6-week program,
students will engage in community service and volunteer
projects around the city, including: serving meals in
soup kitchens; assisting homebound seniors; working with
young children at Epiphany School; and planting &
gardening at Thomas Jefferson Park. In just the
first week of SE '06, participants already completed 184
hours of service. In addition to their service
projects, students will be raising money for the
following four organizations, which they self-selected:
Doctors Without Borders, Heifer International, Save the
Children, and World Wildlife Fund. SE '06
will conclude with a Talent Show Fundraiser in August,
so stay tuned for more information! If you would

Happy
Anniversary! |
|
July
4th marked the 150th Anniversary of the George
Washington statue in Union Square Park. A
ceremony was held on Monday, July 3rd to celebrate the
statue, the oldest sculpture existent in a New York
City park. A product of
Henry Kirke Brown, with the
help of sculptor J.Q.A. Ward, the statue represents
Washington's re-entry
into New York
City on November 23, 1783 as
British forces left, symbolizing the end of the American
Revolution. Since its dedication in 1856, the
statue has become a center piece for public assemblies
and demonstrations in New York
City.
