Understanding the Black Lives Matter Movement

  • Union Square Partnership 4 Irving Place New York, NY, 10003 United States (map)

In the wake of numerous killings of African Americans at the hands of police (from Eric Garner and George Floyd to Sandra Bland and Breonna Taylor) the Black Lives Matter social justice movement has led to renewed conversations in America about the ongoing legacies of race and racism. Yet, despite growing public support for the movement, many Americans remain unclear about clear elements of the movement. What exactly is the Black Lives Matter movement? What are its key principles? What are its demands? And how, exactly, can this movement be used to build a better America?

In this talk, Assistant Professor of the Lang Theater Program/The Arts Department and political organizer, Dr. Frank Leon Roberts, reflects on how Black Lives Matter is remaking American democracy—and MLK’s dream—for a new generation.

Eugene Lang College is committed to ensuring that our programs are accessible to and inclusive of all. Please let us know when registering if you need any additional accommodations.
